Previously, the buzzword was liberalism, and now it has become democracy. It’s difficult to listen to mainstream media without hearing the branding of “This is undemocratic!” “That is undemocratic!” The focus on democracy has long been used to hide other issues which are far more pressing to people living their everyday lives, like trans rights, protecting black lives and bodies from racism, protecting women from sexual assault, and so on. Democracies are governments. Like any other government, a democracy is concerned with one thing first — preserving the current state of society.

Commentators have argued that voting is the way…

Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to a historian who studied the human effects of war. He had studied PTSD in soldiers who fought in wars, and whether PTSD was an inevitable result of war. He believed that this was the case, although the public support for the war was also a significant contributing factor to outcomes in soldiers’ mental, physical, and social health. Of course, I’m much more focused upon the human costs in the countries we’ve bombed, invaded, etc. …

Now that society is becoming, ever more interconnected, perhaps it is time to look at what exactly that means in a social sense. Marxists have known for a while that capitalism and imperialism require ever-expanding markets, and while there are no new lands for people to wander off to “discover,” a new phenomenon has developed: commodity culture.

If we take cultural exchange, and recognize that there are unequal relationships between cultures within economic, cultural, and social exchanges, we begin to see what I’m talking about. Let’s ask a basic question first: “what is culture?” Ultimately, the answer has to be…

Recently, it has come to the attention of myself and others that I have worked with that the community where we live suffers because of our presence as transient students. I am a member of a student organization, and we have begun organizing clothing drives, starting to help out and collect information from community sources about the conditions, as well as collecting statistical information on the community and its makeup. We are a student organization, but have been attempting to build and spread roots in the community, to engage in work in support of community organizations which have similar goals…

How does gendered oppression arise? The question’s stumped a lot of people with high-and-mighty degrees and mountains of education. The answer is one that we have to come to terms with as organizers, and one that we see often; the oppression of women is one of the first oppressions, and it makes itself known through low wages and thankless household labor. The oppression of women is also one of the hegemony. All gendered activities are enforced by wage reductions, lay-offs, and forcing people back into the reserve army of labor, whether male or female, trans or cis.

Trans people feel…

If there is anything that I’ve learned about American history, it is that surprisingly little has changed. I held a meeting recently about activism beyond elections, attended by several radicals and a local business owner, about the building of community support networks. The business owner argued against the organization of base areas, unapologetically capitalist, and declared we were “doing nothing.” Unsurprisingly, the “business owner” left unsatisfied and frustrated with myself and numerous members of the organization I am a part of. …

Well, I suppose it was going to happen eventually. Of course, it was pretty tame, meaningless, and moronic, but hey, I guess that worked out. There were a bunch of Trump supporters with guns at the Capitol. I’m not sure why I’m supposed to be surprised, given the reality that many people predicted this situation would’ve happened. It’s interesting, if nothing else.

It’s only interesting. I suppose it was a dramatic attempt to influence the inevitable. Was this a real threat to American democracy? No. This is tiresome. The “insurrection” in Washington was perhaps a little surprising for those unversed…

Now, the election is over. It is over, and little has changed. In fact, I might be so bold as to assert that absolutely nothing has changed; the greatest struggle of the past decade in my own perspective, has been to maintain that dim illusion of practice. The new liberal government will face challenges. Indeed, there are several sets of challenges that the incoming government must face even before its birth. However, the nattering of liberal bourgeois politicians concern me very little; they may as well be screaming into a void, and in many ways, they are. Here, I will…

With the rise of the protests of George Floyd, estimates led to the conclusion that nearly twelve million people, black and white, went out into the streets in protest. However, the difficulty of this form of protest seems to be that the actual structure of power has not changed. Firms modified their corporate policies, some laws were changed, which perhaps were some signs of what liberals would call “progress,” but we should ask ourselves, what really happened as a result?

A lot of white people have expressed solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, but for all their rhetorical solidarity…

Introduction

All too often, we hear about events that are “unprecedented,” where we could not have predicted their outcomes; they seem to come from nowhere. I have heard so many times that we are living in a time that has no precedent, that history cannot, seemingly, explain. But what on earth does that mean? Why do we believe that the chaos of the past years is something new, something that has never happened before? To get to the heart of these questions, we need to take a long look at how we view history, how history drives us today, and what…
